Latest: Alfie Evans’ dad reveals how toddler’s brave mum is ‘keeping him alive with cuddles’ as they bid to take him home

Little Alfie is “still going strong” nearly 60 hours after his life support was withdrawn – his parents last night lost their court battle to fly him to Italy for treatment

Alfie Evans’s dad says he will meet with doctors today to ask to take the sick toddler home – three days after his life support was switched off.

Tom Evans, 21, slammed medics at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital – where his son is being treated – as he spoke to reporters this morning.

He said they were “wrong” and his little boy had been given a “misdiagnosis”, claiming: “For the third day now, there’s been not one single problem with him.”

He also suggested Alfie could live for “months, possibly years”.

In a separate interview with LBC presenter Nick Ferrari, Tom also revealed how the toddler’s brave mum is keeping him alive by cradling him on her chest.

“Alfie’s fought through the night the last two nights because he’s been lying on her chest nonstop,” he said, as he praised his partner, Kate James.

The dad has vowed to go back to court if today’s meeting “doesn’t go well”.

Last night, he and Kate, both from Liverpool, failed in a last-ditch attempt to persuade judges to let their seriously ill son on fly to Italy for treatment.

’62 hours of independent breathing’

Alfie has now been breathing ‘independently’ for more than 60 hours, those close to his family say.

An admin of the ‘Alfies Army Official’ Facebook page posted shortly before noon: “62 hours of independent breathing.”

It comes as the little boy’s parents are making a bid to take him home from hospital.

Tom says he “wouldn’t take advantage of having Alfie home”

In the same interview with LBC, Tom said he wouldn’t seek to fly his little boy to Italy if he was allowed to bring him home.

Nick asked him: “Would you be satisfied with just having him at home or once you had him would you then seek to use an air ambulance to get him to Italy?”

In response, Alfie’s dad said: “I wouldn’t take advantage of having Alfie home.

“I would have Alfie home and I would sustain his life at home with a private doctor, private team…

“We would do everything we can to keep Alfie home, comfortable and happy.”

How Alfie’s mum has helped him fight through the night

Alfie’s dad has praised the toddler’s mum, saying she has helped their son to fight through the past two nights by cradling him on her chest.

Speaking to LBC today, Tom said: “Alfie’s fought through the night the last two nights because he’s been lying on her chest nonstop.

“And him and his mum have become closer now more than ever before.”

Presenter Nick had asked the dad how his partner, Kate, was.

Tom said: “She’s doing – I’ve got to say, I’m absolutely shocked by Kate. I thought she’d be really broken and absolutely hysterical.

“In fact, she was broken but she was very calm and she dealt with the matter… so well. I’m so lucky I’ve got a partner like her.
